How can you show your connections with the land, people and history around you?
How I can show my connections with the land, people, and history around me is, as a Native American, as a Diné, I never grew up on the reservation, but I do know that showing my connections with the land and the people and the history around me it really changed my own perspective of what it really meant to be indigenous and what it means to be a native. I grew up with an indigenous mother who always wanted me to try and be on the reservation so I can experience what it's like to connect with my land and to connect with my people. Going to the reservation and learning the background history of the land of where my mother's family is from makes me realize that this land that was once ours, millions of years ago, was taken from us. even though I may be from the city, doesn't mean I don't know the own history of indigenous culture, of the land, of the people. my connections with these three main ideas helps me put the puzzle pieces together of what is so important about learning my own culture and why it was significant to my elders, to my mother, to my aunts, and to the people who have discussed the horrible genocide of our race to the point where indigenous people aren't even labeled as native American, we're labeled as "other"
